The Blockchain Name Service (BNS) is the backbone of the Internet of Values. The BNS is a shared, secured, decentralized and intuitive database that acts as a community-curated, token-incentivized registry of human-readable names for blockchains, unique digital assets and wallets.
The BNS aims to list all the active blockchains in the world. It will also list their respective tokens (the currencies they hold) and their bootstrap nodes (the node in each blockchain which provides configuration information for the rest). This directory will provide a single, universal platform in which any blockchain can find the address of any other.
The easiest way to understand the purpose of the Blockchain Name Service, is to make an analogy with the role of the DNS (Domain Name System) on the Internet as we use it today: it lists all domain names and websites and allows anyone to connect to any website by using a simple comprehensive URL, such as www.iov.one, instead of 220.127.116.11. The Blockchain Name Service is like the DNS for Blockchains. It allows anybody to access any token on any blockchain by using a simple, unified and decentralized approach.
